Where is Khikhani Fortress?

The Khikhani Fortress is a medieval fortress in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, in village Zeda Tkhilvani, Khulo municipality. Specifically located on the top of the river Skhalta, on a high steep rock.

Fortress complex includes a fence and is used in brick here. In some places the height of the fence reaches 5-6 meters and width 90-95 centimeters. Four towers are included in the fence. Also in the complex is found in the remains of the church of St. George,which is located in the extreme south-east of the fortress. The church is under the supervision of Skhalta diocese and it isn’t functioning.

Khikhani Fortress is one of the most important fortresses in Adjara. It is built on a most strategic location. The Khikhani fortress and the Tamar King are connected by numerous legends. According to the legend Khikhani fortress has many secret tunnels.
